Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering (BSChE)

The department offers the BS Chemical Engineering (BS ChE) General Curriculum program as well as two major fields of specialization: BS ChE Major in Sugar Technology (BSChE-SUTC) and BS ChE Major in Pulp and Paper Technology (BS ChE-PPT).

BSChE (General Curriculum)

The general curriculum includes at least 56 units of chemical engineering courses, and 6 units of cognate courses which may be chosen from the following fields: sugar engineering, food engineering, pulp and paper technology, management economics, scientific and technical communication, experimental design, wood science and technology, environmental chemistry, biotechnology and food microbiology.

Six units are devoted to thesis work to provide the student experience in integrating and applying his technical knowledge in solving industrial processing problems and generating new technologies relevant to agri-based industries.

BSChE Major in Sugar Technology (BSChE-SUTC)

With solid background in both chemical engineering and sugar technology, it is hoped that this program will develop in the graduates the competency and proper perspective to meet the changing needs of the sugar industry and related agro-based industries.

Students in this program may take the thesis or practicum option. Both options require 22 units of Sugar Technology courses, 42 units of Chemical Engineering courses and 6 units of thesis/practicum.

BSChE Major in Pulp and Paper Technology (BSChE-PPT)

With strong background in both chemical engineering and Pulp Science and Technology, it is expected that this program will produce globally-competitive professionals equipped with the knowledge of the process involved in converting wood and fiber, and recycling the same, into paper.

Students of this program may take the thesis or practicum option. Both options require 27 units of Pulp and Paper courses, 39 units of Chemical Engineering and 6 units of thesis/practicum.

Master of Science in Chemical Engineering (MSChE)

Offering of the degree program Master of Science in Chemical Engineering at UP Los Baños generally aims to provide chemical engineers a greater opportunity for improving or developing further their capabilities in providing quality instruction and in undertaking research and development projects.

Specifically, the M.S. degree program seeks to:

  • - demonstrate profound understanding of chemical engineering principles for analysis and solutions of complex chemical engineering problems;
  • - apply chemical engineering principles to research and development programs of a university, research institution or a chemical process plant; and
  • - demonstrate research capabilities in basic and applied chemical engineering, as they relate to other fields, like dairy food science and technology, pulp and paper technology, sugar technology, agricultural engineering, food science and engineering, biochemical engineering and environmental engineering.

FOR STUDENTS TRANSFERRING/SHIFTING INTO THE BSChE PROGRAM

Apart from the UPLB admission policies, students should have obtained a General Weighted Average (GWA) of 2.0 or better, using the UP Grading System (1.0 to 5.0), while average grade for Physical Science and Mathematics courses should also be 2.0 or better

FOR UPCAT QUALIFIERS INTO UPLB APPLYING FOR WAITLIST

While UPLB has a cut off grade for waitlisting UPCAT Qualifiers, the department implements additional required grades of 80 or better in the Math and Science sub-tests of the UPCAT.
