Prof. Demafelis, FPIChE bags again another prestigious award, this time the Regional CHED RePublica Award under the category for Natural Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Information Technology. The CHED RePublica Awards are offered biennially to recognize and reward outstanding research outputs leading to significant advances in priority disciplines and contributing to national development.
The award recognizes, again, the expertise and leadership of Prof. Demafelis in Biofuels and Alternative Energy Research. He will then be recommended for the National CHED RePublica Award whose winner is expected to be announced by the end of September.
Team UPLB ChE, composed of students: Dhan Lord Fortella, Jomuel Velandres, Mart Benson Castillo and Brent Owen Pastor, and coached by Engr. Ma. Cristina V. Mahilum and Engr. Amelia E. Parao placed first in the PIChE Quiz Bowl National Finals. This is the second time students from the department bagged the championship, the first was in 2004.
The PIChE Quiz Bowl National Finals was held on February 17, 2010 as one of the events of the 71st PIChE National Convention held at the Development Academy of the Philippines Convention Center in Tagaytay City.

The Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers (PIChE) held on February 16-18, 2010 its 71st National Convention at the Development Academy of the Philippines Convention Center in Tagaytay City. The convention was anchored on the theme “Professionals in Challenging Times, Emerging Opportunities.’’
In recognition of the contributions of Prof. Rex B. Demafelis to the country and to science, the PIChE elected him to be one of the first batch of PIChE College Fellows, according him the title of “Fellow of the Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers (FPIChE).” Prof. Demafelis, a former President of PIChE, is known for spearheading the Biofuels and Alternative Energy Research at the University of the Philippine Los Baños, propelling the program to gain international recognition. The induction ceremony of the PIChE Fellows was held on the last day of the convention.
