Mechanics of the
2010 UPLB Chemical Engineering Student Congress

A. Research Paper Eligibility
1. All graduating students are eligible to submit research papers for the 2010
UPLB Chemical Engineering Student Congress.
2. The submitted research must have been completed within SY 2009-2010.
B. Preparation and Deadline of Submission
1. Prepare an abstract of your research and submit it on or before February 24,
2010 (Wednesday) to

2. Finalists will be notified on or before February 26, 2010 (Friday).Format of Abstract
• Use Times New Roman, 12 point font
• Title (centered, bold upper case)
• Authors (centered in upper and lower case); use first full names, presenting
author (student) first followed by advisers and panel members
• Abstract body (justified, 1.5 spacing)
• File should be in Microsoft Word formatGuidelines in preparing abstracts
1. Abstract should contain no more than 300 words.
2. The introduction should give scope and purpose and should be 2-3 short
sentences only.
3. Describe experimental approach briefly.
4. Give highlights of results; be quantitative, if possible or as the nature of
the paper permits.
5. Uncommon acronyms should be spelled out the first time they are used; if
several acronyms are used, list them with their meanings at the end of abstract.
6. Give major conclusions.
7. Provide at least five keywords.
8. Do not list references in abstract text or body.
C. Oral Presentation
1. Each presentation is allocated a timeslot of 10 minutes for presentation and
5 minutes for questions and discussions.
2. For appropriate timing of the talk, it is recommended to use no more than 15
slides that are not too dense.
3. The slides should attract the attention of the audience and emphasize the key
points of the paper.
4. The slides should be easy to understand and legible even from a larger
distance.
5. Too many text and small fonts should be avoided.
6. Figures and diagrams, wherever possible, and colors for headings may be used.
7. A computer and LCD Projector will be provided.
D. Criteria and Judging
1. The research will be judged according to the following criteria
i. Contribution to scientific body of knowledge 40%
ii. Mastery of Problem and Methodology 30%
iii. Organization of Presentation 15%
iv. Oral Presentation 15%
2. Papers will be judged by a panel of at least three judges.
3. The judges decision shall be final and not subject to appeal.
E. Awarding and Prizes
Winning entries shall be awarded certificates and cash prizes at the end of the
program. The paper which will be awarded as the 2010 UPLB ChE Best Research
Project will be the department’s entry to the college-wide Best Thesis Search.
